Applying a multi-cycle life cycle assessment framework

Measuring the real environmental gains of reuse

Circular products promise lower impact, but how do you prove it? The European life cycle assessment standard for construction products is built for one linear life cycle. It was never designed for products that are reused, refurbished and reinstalled again and again.

VITO researchers applied the multi-cycle assessment framework from the Horizon Europe project Drastic to two MASCO cases. Over multiple cycles, NNOF's remanufactured and reused office tables cut environmental impact by 55 to 66%, and JUUNOO's BaseClick wall by 60%, breaking even with a standard gypsum wall by cycle 2.
